An event as pretext

We've all taken advantage of an opportunity to satisfy an unconscious (or hidden) urge, a desire stored away in the back of our mind.
Such was the fate of the cocktail party that we were organizing to inaugurate the agency. The plan for a simple have-a-drink-and-toast-the-agency quickly turned into a full-blown cocktail-dinner party. Grand plans beget grand planning – and stoked our natural obsession for detail. The square table suddenly became too square, the wooden counter too bare and in need of a glass surface (much classier). And then there were the plants, some of which looked simply lifeless: "Is that plant particularly depressed today," I asked with my usual diplomacy, "or has it always been that way?" Our to-do list, never short, grew like a weed, and our budget quickly surpassed the calculating capacity of our fingers and toes.
In the end, our get-together on the 8th Continent was a rousing success...and we couldn't be happier!
